Navigating the Global Essay Lost in Translation ; Seamus Heaney Essay Free Essays

The reactions of characters towards a turning planetary civilization. whether a retreat or an embracing. are to a great extent influenced by personal picks. We will write a custom essay sample on Navigating the Global Essay: Lost in Translation ; Seamus Heaney Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Within the sphere of Voyaging the Global. picks are about surely influenced by the fortunes in which they occur. whether this be a pick to maintain the connexion to the local. or travel towards a more planetary scene. Three cardinal texts that exemplify this phenomenon include the movie ‘Lost in Translation’ by Sophia Coppola made in 2003. the Seamus Heaney’s poems ‘Digging’ ( 1998 ) and ‘Personal Helicon’ . and eventually the illustration ‘Globalisation’ ( 2012 ) by Michael Leunig. All three delve profoundly into the interplay between internal pick and external circumstance. While they do research how fortunes can act upon picks. ‘Lost in Translation’ has a secondary probe of how picks can impact the circumstance. ‘Lost in Translation’ is a movie that explores the determinations made by two characters when they are stranded in a foreign state. It besides shows how their fortunes finally shape the determinations that they make. The characters already exist in a extremely globalised universe. and moreover. in one of the most technologically advanced metropoliss on the planet – Japan. Although the movie is set in this metropolis. there is besides an component of the local throughout the movie. Japan’s apposition of the new age and deep-seated tradition becomes a focal point throughout the movie as the supporters finally end up giving favour towards that planetary Utopia they found with each other. The supporters. Charlotte and Bob represent opposing sides of this ; Charlotte the traditional. Bob the new age. A scene that best represents Charlotte’s supplanting within this technological environment. is when she is situated within her hotel room. and is speaking to a friend on the phone. The dull lighting and Grey cityscape that is seen from out the extended window. high spots her supplanting within the hotel. The mid shut up angle of Charlotte huddled on a place in the center of the room. shouting to her friend about how she misses them. farther demonstrates her isolation within the black scene. This juxtaposes strongly with her behaviour when she is out near a temple with nature around her. She seems. although entirely. to be more at place and interested with the civilization than when entirely in the hotel. and in one scene. is in awe of a stamp minute between bride and groom. This is shown through the broad shooting of her standing back from the twosome. and a panning shooting of them walking. with the bride in traditional frock. The fact that we feel Charlotte is more comfy within a natural scene is even more relevant to the pick that she makes to pass more clip with Bob in a more commercial and authoritarian metropolis. and within the hotel. The hotel is one of the most symbolic characteristics of the movie and as hotels are a world-wide symbol for globalisation and the meeting of civilization with traditions. this becomes of import when Bob chooses to remain longer because of the close friendly relationship formed with Charlotte. They are a physical manifestation of cross-cultural convergence in one individual topographic point. Therefore. the hotel in ‘Lost in Translation’ becomes a clear word picture of non merely the supporters fortunes act uponing their pick. but of isolation. of the bounds of the American ethos. and of the dangers of linguistic communication barriers. This is demonstrated clearly in the sauna scene for Bob. when two other work forces have a conversation. perchance in German. which he is incapable of understanding. The high angle mid shut up shooting of the two work forces sitting together. speaking comfortably. while Bob is distanced from them with a offended look. illustrates his confusion and banishment from general raillery and interaction with new people. Earlier in the movie. Bob tries to pass on to the lensman in his whiskey advertizement. The manager harangues for a drawn-out period. doing expansive physical gestures and dramatically giving instructions. but when he finished this public presentation. his transcriber says merely a simple sentence of obscure way. This is another critical indicant of how the true significance of words and conversation is wholly lost in interlingual rendition. This subject of the globalised universe of Japan is relevant to the circumstance that the film has been set up in because of Sophia Coppola’s 21st century up conveying. The film itself can be seen as a remark on the turning planetary graduated table of the universe. and the multicultural boundaries that are film overing and altering within the universe. Not unlike Lost in Translation. Michael Leunig’s sketch ‘Globalisation’ focuses on the move off from the natural and towards encompassing an progressively planetary and technological universe. The image portrays two human figures in the Centre. they are framed on one side by a stark. black tree that seems to be smoldering as if holding merely been burned. and on the other side by a aggregation of tall edifices with little Windowss. seen from a distance. The lone text in the illustration says. ‘What is Globalisation? Globalisation is put ining light Earths in every bit many topographic points as possible on the face of the earth’ . The wordplay of ‘Globalisation’ is used to decrease or even parody the impact of existent globalization. The human figures face off from nature and look to prefer the cityscape. with their faces upturned with little smilings. This symbolism of traveling off from the smouldering. enduring tree and towards the apparently pristine metropolis is used to convey that we. as worlds. are burying our original place in nature. He suggests a witting pick to travel off from the natural and towards the planetary civilization. The fact that the tree is so outstanding within the image. and that it is giving off some sort of toxic looking fume. is an baleful symbol which forshadows the dangers of preferring the man-made to our natural province. Similarly. this penchant is reflected repeatedly in Lost In Translation. with characters traveling towards the planetary and more technological universe. But in contrast. Leunig conveys this in a more sinister and nescient tone. whereas in Lost In Translation. the more modern scene is seen as a sort of safe oasis for the two characters who are lost in their common isolation. This relates back to the issue of how the fortunes that you are in. e. g. the isolation that Charlotte and Bob feel. and the deceasing natural universe in Leunig’s illustration. act upon the picks that are made. this clip being to travel and accept a more planetary universe. In contrast to Lost In Translation. Seamus Heaney’s poems ‘Digging’ and ‘Personal Helicon’ focal point on the importance of the local. and the foundational relationships held within taking to maintain that plain connexion. Within these two verse forms. great importance is placed on the geographic expedition and grasp of nature and the natural environment. Throughout the verse form ‘Digging’ . the connexion to his male parent. gramps and other household members. and his pick to stay affiliated with his Irish heritage is seen through â€Å" †¦ a clean rasping sound – When the spade sinks down into the gravelly land – my male parent. excavation. I look down. The audile imagination in ‘rasping sound’ when explicating the shovel noise is an immediate nexus to nature. and the significance of murphies and agribusiness in Irish heritage is highlighted. The direct nexus to his male parent with ‘ My male parent. I look down’ conveys his relationship with his male parent is still at that place. but that it has changed from him looking up to his male parent. to him doing the more big pick of admiting his work. but traveling off from him. or going an grownup. This pick to distance himself from the outlooks of his male parent comes within the last line â€Å"Between my finger and my thumb- The chunky pen rests- Ill dig with it. The metaphor of turning his more modern occupation of a author. and the tool in which he uses. his pen. and turning it into a spade which was his male parent and grampss tool. Tells us that. although he is honouring household and maintaining within the local by still keeping connexions. the fortunes for him have changed. and so he moves merely somewhat to a more modern universe. The poem ‘Personal Helicon’ is somewhat different. in that it is wholly about traveling off from the people ar ound you. and the forward universe. and happening peace in purdah and nature. This verse form of the remembrances of a adult male looking back on his childhood and his captivation with Wellss. is one that demonstrates how childhood and the associations that you had as a kid. in this case with nature. can act upon what you do subsequently in life. and how he longs for that childhood captivation once more. Within the line ‘I savored the rich clang when a pail – Plummeted down at the terminal of a rope. ’ It gives us insight into Heaneys connexion with the simpleness of nature. and his childlike self’s captivation with crude objects. Maintaining A Healthy Relationship Essays - , Term Papers

Maintaining A Healthy Relationship Maintaining a Healthy Relationship For the past four months I have been in my most promising relationship, yet. But sometimes things go nuts and it feels like there is nothing I can do about it. So I thought I would check out what goes into a healthy relationship. I found a variety of qualities, but I'll keep it simple. Remember the 4 C's. You must be courageous, care enough, communicate effectively, and be creative. Once you get these down, your relationship will be deemed healthy, by the relationship gods. In an effort to overcome his fear of rejection, Jonathan Robinson (2001), a psychotherapist and frequent guest on Oprah, decided to plow right through his fear. He gave his friend $50 dollars and told him to keep it until he came back with ten rejections from girls. His first attempt proved fairly pathetic. His prospective date asked him if he needed an ambulance. Shaking and sweating, Jonathan proceeded to ask her and the next five girls out. With each rejection, he knew more of what to expect. Then he got a yes, followed by eight more. He realized the key to overcoming one's fear of rejection was to set it up so that getting rejected was seen as a success. If this sounds too scary or difficult, you're probably a good candidate for it (1). So the next time you're out, go for it. What have you got to lose, but a single, lonely life? Now you have a date, but how do you make it last? For starters you can continue being that courageous person you know you are. I Date Smart.com (2001), a website featuring Shari, a columnist on love, contains all kinds of information on being a good mate. ?Men, you are heroes. Accept nothing less from a woman than being ?her hero. Another expert writes, ?Growth demands a temporary surrender of security? (1). When we become involved with someone we have to open our hearts to them, making us vulnerable. It takes an incredible amount of courage, but true love gives you real happiness in your life. I care about my girlfriend so much; I let us become friends for a while. She needed time to adjust to a big move and did not want the added stress of a boyfriend. I had to be understanding and supportive or I would lose her. As difficult as it was, I would do it all over again, if she asked me to. When your special someone's feeling down your attitude should never be, ?I'll come back when you are feeling better.? You should be the one to begin the healing process (Ten Ways to Keep Love Alive, 1993, p.114). I know it is hard, but if your mate will allow it you need to be as close as you can. Just being there will comfort them. How would you feel if your man or woman came by when you were in a bad mood, but they stayed with you the whole time? You would probably be thankful, a ?good mood? feeling. Whenever a couple gets in a spat, there is usually a breakdown in the communication process. This can take all forms. For instance you might misunderstand a word, a tone of voice, or even a gesture. The longer you are with someone, the easier it becomes to understand him or her. The mistakes will not be as frequent and you will be spending more time really talking. One article goes on to say, ?You should not be afraid to discuss matters that may create conflict. If feelings of anger or jealousy rise to the surface, maintain your cool and get them out into the open right away.? It is better to tell someone they upset you and talk about it, than to hold it in until you pop (Ten Ways to Keep Love Alive, 1993, p.114). You need to be able to consider the other person's circumstances too. Imagine your day. It went perfect and theirs did not. You have to be understanding and meet them on their level without being short yourself. You have to be their best friend. One of my co-workers told me about how her boyfriend left a trail of Hershey's

Free Essays on Teenage Suicide

Suicide has been said to be a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It has been estimated for every successful suicide, there is between two hundred to three hundred people who will attempt it (Vannetta 1996). According to statistics provided by National Center for Health Statistics (2000), an average of 30,000 suicide deaths occur in the United States each year. It is estimated that 5,000 of those suicides are committed by teenagers. Suicide happens every 90minutes and is the 2nd leading cause of death among college student and third leading cause of death among youth between ages 15-24. It outnumbers homicides by 5 to 3 and has twice as many deaths as HIV/AIDS. At a ratio of 4:1, more boys than girls are successful at completing suicide; although twice as many girls will attempt suicide. The self may be an important link to why some of the population commits suicide. Self-concept is important in a person’s ability to handle the little changes that threaten the n orms of our individuality. â€Å"The relative strength of contingent and non-contingent components of the self-concept vary by age and sex, thereby, creating varying vulnerabilities to identify threat,† stated Girard (1993 p.555). When committing suicide, boys seek more aggressive means, and as stated earlier, are more successful than girls. Perhaps the avenue of expression each sex takes to attain their respective self-concept is a key to why so many teens attempt or commit suicide within our society. Suicide is a problem that is felt all over the span of the life cycle. Suicide has become the third leading cause of death in the age group of 15 to 24 year olds. In horrifying contrast, the suicide rate of adolescents has tripled since the 1950’s. At present, statistics provided by the National Institute of Mental Health, display male to female ratios as 4:1 Suicide 3 for age group 10 to 14 with a mortality rate of 1.5 per 100,000, 5:1... Free Essays on Teenage Suicide Free Essays on Teenage Suicide Mike Emme, a seventeen year old drove a bright yellow ’67 Ford Mustang. Mike worked really hard to restore his car. Mike being a gifted student was happy, helpful, and had a bright future. Mike being a kind man, he ordered a brand new transmission for his mustang, but he canceled it and bought two used ones from a salvage yard instead, so one of his friends could have his car up and running too. Mike was a very smart man; he learned how to remove a tracheotomy tube from his handicapped niece, he also learned how to sign to her. Mike was a great individual, but his life took a turn for the worse when his girlfriend broke up with him. She told Mike that she was engaged to someone else. One night he got into the front seat of his car and shot himself. Mike had written a note before he shot himself. The note had read, â€Å"I wish I could have learned to hate. Don’t blame yourselves. Mom and dad, I love you. Remember I’ll always be with you.† The note was sig ned, â€Å"love, Mike 11:45pm.† At 11:52 Mike’s parents and his brother came home seven minutes too late to save him. The above story is a summarization of the story (â€Å"For the Love of a Child† in The Third Serving of Chicken Soup for the Soul by Thea Alexander). Teen suicides are becoming a more common social issue than it has been in the past. Everyone knows the old saying that your teen years are the best years of your life. This saying confuses most people to question why a person would want to take their own life? Considering when a teenager hasn’t lived his/her life to the fullest. â€Å"Suicides are the third leading cause of death. Teens have died from suicides more than from cancer, heart disease, HIV, AIDS, birth defects, pneumonia, stroke, and lung disease combined.† (Casey, 93) â€Å"Suicidal behavior first creeps into our statistical tables at around the age of 12 and rises steadily through the teen years and beyond.† (Chiles, 29) It is estimated that 30,000 peop... Understanding the bible Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Understanding the bible - Essay Example The books of Kings were originally written by many people from the oral as well as the written traditions. In the written tradition, we should also include the palace annals including the Book of the Acts of Solomon, the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel. An extended narrative called the Succession Narrative about David’s reign might have contributed heavily towards the first two chapter of the beginning of the book. The story of Elijah, as well as that of his disciple Elisha, was originally oral. The book must have taken its form mainly during the eighth century BC and late seventh century BC. The book of Kings may be considered to be a part of the Deuteronomical history, including books of Joshua, Judges and Samuel. This is because the style of writing followed in the book is mainly as that of Deuteronomy. The book of kings is narrative, historiographical and didactical in nature. It tells the story, not the complete history and also tries to teach us its version of the Truth. The story gives importance on how and when such and such a monarch ruled, how he failed or succeeded in following the path of Israel [and Judah] as the chosen people of God, how they fought and won or faced defeat . The didacticism lies in reiterating that The Lord God of Israel is the only God and he controlled the weather, the whole of creation and history. The prophets describe the future before God brings it about. It is He and not the kings, or prophets or even the gods that the kings worship who is in control. This is the main theme of the two books of Kings (Coogan, Brettler, Newsom, & Pheme, 2007.). Another repeating theme in the book is that the wrongdoer is always punished. The image of God here is that of a judge and crimes are always punished. Even though the judgment may get held up but in time, without repentance it gradually comes upon the sinner [I kings 21. 25-28.] The books of Kings come right after the books of

Health Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1

Health Economics - Essay Example The healthcare system consists of all the people and the action they undertake, whose primary effort is to improve citizens’ health of a particular state. The potential scope of a healthcare system may include the public and private sectors as well as a spectrum of providers as well as funders who may improve health. A full range of organizational form is more likely to be visible in a developed world healthcare delivery system (Aspalter, Uchida & Gauld, 2012, p.2). Modern healthcare systems are not all about delivering personal healthcare. The institutions that govern the provision of healthcare are concerned with mechanisms in which the individuals can access healthcare such as the earned insurance settlements and the social citizenship. They are also concerned with the mechanisms responsible for deciding the amount of resources allocated to financing the provision of health care services such as setting regulatory frameworks as well as governing via public management. Institutions governing the provision of healthcare include mechanisms for regulating hospitals such as a mix of differently owned hospitals and the amount of public regulation as well as regulation of doctors. This is especially different forms of private interest government (Giarelli, 2010). This is a reflection of the centrality of hospitals and doctors when it comes to the provision of healthcare (Giarelli, 2010, p.189). All the modern healthcare systems face common challenges. These challenges are due to globalization, rapid technological advancements, medical progress and changes in demography. Consequently, these systems have no option but to change the organization in the way they it is governed and provide healthcare (Walshe & Smith, 2011, p.145). The health care system in the UK initially followed an insurance health model introduced in 1911 by Lloyd George (Walshe & Smith, 2011). At the time, many systems covered only the industrial workers and

Graduation Speech -- Graduation Speech, Commencement Address

I want to thank my family for giving me the opportunity to receive a private education and for encouraging me to always do my best. Thank you to my friends and their parents who have loved me and believed in me. Most of all, I want to say thanks to God for giving me the gifts He has and for loving me unconditionally; for without Him, I am nothing. It is hard for me to believe that we are graduating from high school; time has flown by. At the beginning of freshman year I remember being scared and wondering just how I would fit in and if I would make friends or not. I wasn't fearful for long though because our class bonded right away. I believe we came together so much because we changed together and we discovered life together. As Mr. Leopold would say, we had many "Aha's" along the way. We experienced uncertainty, frustration, and sorrow, but we overcame because we laughed and we laughed and we laughed. And, we hoped and we prayed. We genuinely encouraged each other and now at the end of our senior year we could not ask for more faithful friends. At Kennedy Murphy we are not ju...

Why Whaling Should Be Banned

Whales have been hunted by humans for their meet, bones and blubber.Whaling, during the 19th century, wiped out most of the world's whale populations.Whales grow and breed slowly; numbers will take a long time to recover. This means that they will more easily become more extinct.InformationThe International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned whaling in 1986.There are some countries that issue permits to kill whales for research; Japan uses this to hunt whales and the meat from their research. The Japanese whaling people left for the Antarctic in December 2006, with the intention of killing 850 Minke whales and 10 fin whales.Whales are hunted for their: Liver – oil * Skin – Belts/ shoes/ handbags and luggageBone – animal feed and fertilisersTeeth – buttons/ piano keys and jewellery Why?1. Lots of different types of whales are hunted, including: Right Whale: It was considered the perfect whale to hunt because it had lots of blubber for oil lamps; (that is why it is called â€Å"Right† whale. ) Blue Whale: Considered too dangerous to hunt mostly, but some of the more brave hunters went after this whale because, it is bigger and so it provides more blubber, meat and bone. Arguments against Whaling Anti-whaling extremists claim that the whale is an intelligent mammal, that is able to feel pain the same way humans do, and that they should be treated as humans. Those supporting whaling think that, and claims that man is above the whales and man has been put on this earth by God to maintain the natural resources, in which includes the lords of the sea, – the whales.Maintain meaning both making sure they don’t become extinct but as masters of this earth, we are allowed to hunt them. Whaling is a tradition, especially in Norway, but also in other countries, like Japan, and for some, keeping traditions alive is very important. The strongest argument against whaling is simply the pain it has to go through. As stated above, anti-whalers say that the whale feels pain the same way humans do, and when a harpoon hits a whale, it might take up to 10 minutes before it is dead. If the whale is dead 10 seconds after impact with the harpoon, the whale is killed instantly, they claim, but this is rare.In 1996, whaling-inspectors reported that the average time the whale had to suffer rated from 4-6 minutes. But that is just the killing process. Before you can shoot the whale, you have to find the whale, and because the whale is only up to breathe a couple of seconds the shooter has 2-3 seconds to fire. Anti-whalers say that the hunting, which may take up to several hours, must scare the whale, and they want us to imagine the fright the whale must feel when being hunted. There is no question about it, whaling provides work, and whaling provides meat.Whale meat is very popular in Norway, but Norway also has a big surplus of meat ever year, so why keep hunting whale? Sure, whalers say, Norway has a big surplus of meat, but whale meat is considered a luxury. Ità ¢â‚¬â„¢s expensive and it’s tasteful. It seems, anti-whalers want to bring us back to the idea about man being equal to animals when they want us to imagine the pain the whale must go through, and try to imagine what we, as humans would feel if we were being hunted like that. Whalers do it for the money, and for them it is a tradition. There grandfathers have been doing it for several hundred years, so why stop now.In 1996 there were 110’000 whales in the Atlantic, and it was wiped from the list of endangered species. There is no question about it; whalers also do it for the provocation and the media attention.Reasons for WhalingWhaling provides workWhaling provides meat.Whale meat is very popular in NorwayWhale meat is considered a luxury. It’s expensive and it’s tasteful.Product of Whale The main source of these products comes from the Sperm Whale and the Right Whaling
